Beach Keepsake

7-10 year olds | half hour

What do you do with all those shells your children find at the beach and insist on bringing home? Ask them to pick out their favourites and use them in this practical clay craft!

What You'll Need

  • 2 plastic or glass bowls
  • 500 grams flour
  • 180 grams salt
  • 250 ml water
  • beach keepsakes

1. Mix flour, salt and water in the first bowl. Knead until you have a clay consistency.
2. Press the dough firmly into the second bowl to take mould. Turn the bowl over and tap to release dough from the mould (for a larger mould to create a doorstop use a larger bowl).
3. While still malleable, press keepsakes firmly into domed shape. Shells and rocks are best.
4. Place these domed shapes on baking sheet. Put in preheated oven (180 ºC) for an hour or until creation hints at a slight brown.
5. Take out of the oven, let it cool and display.

Recipe makes 4 paperweights, 2 doorstops.
