Black-out Stories

11-14 year olds | one hour

A great activity to discover the creative writer and composer in all of us. All you need are old newspapers and black markers to create these stories and this activity sharpens child’s reading and writing skills. Inspired by Austin Kleon’s poems.

What You'll Need

  • newspaper
  • black marker

1. Tear out half of a newspaper spread (or a quarter).
2. Read the articles or look for words that you’d like to use.
3. When you find a phrase, letters, or sentence that you want to be part of your story, black out everything around it.
4. Construct your stories like this. They can be short stories or long ones, free-form poems or rhyming. Let you imagination decide!
