Compass

7-10 year olds | half hour

Help your children understand the properties of magnetism and compasses with this short craft.

What You'll Need

  • a magnet
  • bowl of water
  • leaf or tissue paper
  • needle

Instructions

1. Fill the bowl with water.
2. Stroke the needle 40 times with the magnet. Be sure to stroke the needle in the same direction with the magnet. This will magnetise it.
3. Place the needle on a leaf or piece of tissue paper.
4. Place these two things gently on the water. Don’t worry if the paper sinks.
5. The needle will turn and orientate itself North-South. You can slowly turn the bowl and it will continue to adjust back to the North-South position!
