Crush a bottle without using your hands

4-6 year olds | half hour

A great way to show kids that invisible processes that take place as water changes temperature.

What You'll Need

  • 2-litre bottle with cap
  • Large bowl or pan (deep enough that your 2-litre bottle can stand in it and be more than half-submerged)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Fill your two-litre bottle with hot water (not boiling, as the bottle may melt).
  2. Put the cap on the bottle, to keep as much heat in the bottle as possible.
  3. Fill the large bowl or pan with very cold water and put loads of ice in it to make sure the water stays cold.
  4. Stand the bottle in the cold water.
  5. Watch it slowly becoming crushed without anyone touching it (this may take a few minutes). The coldness of the water around the bottle makes the water inside it slowly turn cold and the air trying to escape in this process makes the bottle seemingly collapse into itself.
