Decoupage Bag

7-10 year olds | two hours

Turn mum’s or grandma’s old vinyl bag into a colourful work of art or fashion statement.

What You'll Need

  • a vinyl bag
  • sandpaper
  • gesso (a white, acrylic binder paint found in craft stores)
  • decoupage glue (also found at a craft store)
  • scrap fabric
  • old magazines
  • scissors

1. Find an old bag laying around the house. A smooth vinyl purse will work for this project.
2. Cut out old magazines and fabric pieces that you want to put on the bag. Have these pieces cut and ready for step 6.
3. Rub the bag with sandpaper. Be careful and make sure your children know about sandpaper before using it (adult supervision required).
4. With gesso and a paintbrush, apply a layer to the outside of the bag. Paint one side at a time and let it dry in between.
5. When the entire bag is dry, liberally apply decoupage glue to the painted area.
6. Place the fabric and magazine pieces onto the bag. Then apply more decoupage on top.
7. Let the bag dry.
8. Wear it proudly!
