Hand-coloured Photographs

11-14 year olds | two hours

Remember seeing your grandmother’s portraits, black-and-white prints with hand-coloured detail? Recreate that same vintage look with your children in this art activity. It suits any age range, but for finer detail and more interesting results, encourage your older children to try their hand at this.

What You'll Need

  • black and white photographs printed on paper
  • crayons

  1. Pick photographs you want to use for the project. Portraits, landscapes and floral scenes are all great choices.
  2. Print these photos out of your computer in black and white.
  3. Colour in portions of the photographs with crayons. For flowers, try colouring accents on petals or leaves. For portraits, add highlights to hair, shine to eyes, coloured creases on clothing or skin tone.
  4. Be experimental. For a modern-art look, try using colours that don’t correspond to the subject.
  5. Display.
