Heart Bowl

4-6 year olds | two hours

Create and paint this simple heart bowl to hold favourite keepsakes, to use as a candle holder, or to give to a loved one. A perfect Valentine’s Day craft for young kids.

What You'll Need

  • air dry clay or play dough
  • a glass bowl
  • rolling pin
  • craft knife
  • paints
  • glitter
  • pencil
  • hair dryer
  • glue

  1. Flatten out air dry clay with a rolling pin.
  2. Trace a heart shape on the clay, making it as large as you’d like the bowl.
  3. Cut out the heart shape with a craft knife (adult supervision required).
  4. Gently turn your clay heart over the bottom of a bowl, pressing the edges up around the sides.
  5. Alternatively, put your clay heart inside of a bowl, pressing the edges up against the inside edges of the bowl.
  6. Let the clay dry in or around the bowl. When the clay feels like stiff leather, it is safe to remove from the bowl, but remember to do so slowly and gently.
  7. Once removed from the bowl, blow dry to be sure that most of the moisture has been removed.
  8. Paint the heart! The obvious colour choice is red, but feel free to experiment with whatever colours you want.
  9. Cover the rim of the heart-shaped clay bowl with glue. You could add buttons or glitter for flair.
