Ice Cube Magic Trick

7-10 year olds | half hour

Amaze friends and family with this simple trick that seems to defy the laws of gravity.

What You'll Need

  • cup
  • ice cube
  • piece of string
  • salt

1. Place an ice cube in a drinking cup full of water. Wait until it floats to the top.
2. Put the end of a string on top of the ice cube and sprinkle salt on top of both.
3. Wait 5 seconds and then pull the string out. The ice cube will be attached!

How does this work?
The salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, in this case melting the ice cube just enough for it to saturate the string with water and then re-freeze around it.
