Keychain

11-14 year olds | two hours

This craft makes a great back-to-school activity or party craft. Make a keyring for your keys or to decorate your backpack.

What You'll Need

  • 2 colours plastic lanyard lace, 1.5 m long each (found at most craft stores)
  • key ring
  • beads (only 2 or 2)
  • ruler
  • scissors

Instructions

1. Measure and cut both colours of your lanyard lace to 1.5 metres.
2. Take your first colour (we’ll say blue) and put in through the key ring, with the ends hanging down. Make sure the ends are the same length, so that the key ring is in the middle of this lace.
3. Place the second coloured lace (we’ll say green) right underneath the key ring. Take the blue top end of the blue lace and fold it over the green lace, so the green lace rests in between the two blue lace ends. Make sure both are centred.
4. Fold the left-hand-side green lace to the right, over the blue lace.
5. Fold the blue lace piece that is behind the green laces up and over the green laces.
6. Fold the green lace that is behind everything to the left, on top of the first blue lace and underneath the second piece of blue lace (it will look like weaving).
7. Pull all the laces tight to form a patchworked-square.
8. Start the pattern again, folding the top blue over the right green, bottom blue up and on top of left green, etc.
9. Once you only have 10 cm left of your lace, thread the beads through all four laces. Then knot at the bottom.
