Papier-Mâché Dinosaur Hat

7-10 year olds | two hours

Let your child be playful with paper mache dinosaur hats. These simple hats will have your young one happy and free.

What You'll Need

  • Large balloon
  • Newspaper
  • Flour-water glue
  • Scissors
  • Assorted paper, cardboard scraps, styrofoam scraps, egg cartons
  • Paint
  • String or elastic
  • Thin white plastic (from a margarine tub) or white card
  • Sticky tape


  1. Blow up a balloon
  2. Make some glue from flour and water.  4-5 parts water, one part flour.  Simmer for 2-3 mins for best results and leave to cool.
  3. Tear newspaper strips that are about 1-inch wide.
  4. Dip strips of newspaper into flour-water glue.
  5. Place strips onto a sideways-placed balloon. Apply the strips to cover roughly half of each balloon.
  6. Apply three layers and allow to dry overnight.
  7. Pop the balloon when the hat is dry.
  8. Punch holes for chin straps and paint skin color, eyes, etc.
  9. Add some teeth by taping white triangles (made from card or margerine tub plastic) around the edge.
  10. Add string or elastic to use as chin strap.
  11. Have fun playing a dinosaur!  ROAR!!!
