Twist Bread - Family recipes for kids

Don’t just let your kids help out in the kitchen, with this recipe, let them take charge. It’s an easy bread recipe that’s fun to make and educates your kids about baking.

What You'll Need

  • 500g (1lb 2oz) strong white bread flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon bread yeast
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 300 mL water


  1. Preheat the oven to 230 ºC.
  2. Make sure everyone who’s baking washes their hands.
  3. Mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a big bowl. Kids can use their hands.
  4. Slowly add the water to this mix and blend while adding. Continue mixing for five minutes.
  5. Knead the dough for ten minutes, but don’t be afraid to smash, roll, and fold.
  6. Split the dough into three long strips of the same size.
  7. Plait them and press the ends together to make a twist loaf.
  8. Cover the loaf with a damp towel and let rise for two hours.
  9. After rising, come back to the loaf. Set the loaf on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.
  10. Let kids choose what to put on their fresh bread. Butter, jam, peanut butter, sugar and cinnamon and cheese are all yummy options.
