Walnut Finger Boats

4-6 year olds | half hour

Make a miniature boat and watch it sail in a pool, sink or open water.

What You'll Need

  • candle
  • toothpick
  • walnut
  • paper
  • pens

Instructions

1. Crack open a walnut and remove the nut. One half of a shell will make one boat.
2. Light a candle and melt a layer of wax in the bottom of one of the walnut shells. While the wax is still soft, stick a toothpick into the boat. Let it cool completely.
3. While it is cooling, cut a small square of paper out and draw a design on it.
4. Piece the paper on the toothpick twice, to make a mast.
5. Make more walnut boats and place them in a sink, tub, or body of water. Watch them float and make a race.
